Where Strong Foundations Begin

By the time a child reaches first grade, the foundation for lifelong learning is already set.

Research shows:

  • 90% of brain development occurs before age five
  • Vocabulary at kindergarten entry strongly predicts later academic success
  • Early gaps in knowledge often persist or widen over time

Early education is not preparation for learning.  It is learning.

At A Greater Start Learning Center, we provide a deliberate, content-rich and engaging educational experience that blends the Core Knowledge Curriculum with hands-on STEM learning, beginning in Pre-K and continuing through Kindergarten.

Our mission is simple:

Give children the strongest possible start - academically, socially and intellectually.

Meaningful Engagement

Learning is active and purposeful.  Children discuss ideas, ask questions and apply what they learn in ways that deepen understanding and build lasting knowledge.

Rich Content

We expose children to meaningful knowledge across subjects like history, science, literature, and the arts - building vocabulary and background knowledge that supports comprehension and critical thinking.

Clear Instruction

Clear Instruction

Our teachers provide direct, explicit instruction that helps children to understand new concepts and skills with clarity and confidence.

A Core Knowledge Curriculum

What Is Core Knowledge?

Core Knowledge is a content-rich, sequential curriculum that provides children with a strong foundation in history, geography, science, literature, and the arts.  Unlike programs that focus primarily on isolated skills, Core Knowledge builds knowledge systematically - ensuring that children develop the background understanding necessary for reading comprehension, critical thinking, and academic success.  Learning is sequenced intentionally, so each concept builds upon what children have already learned.

Research consistently shows that knowledge is the foundation of literacy and learning. Children who are taught a coherent, content-rich curriculum perform better academically and are better prepared for the demands of higher education.

Why Core Knowledge Matters

Builds Background Knowledge

Supports Reading Comprehension

Builds Background Knowledge

Children need knowledge to understand what they read.

Core Knowledge ensures they learn about the world systematically.

  • Expanding vocabulary naturally
  • Introducing children to the world beyond their immediate experience
  • Building confidence through familiarity with ideas and concepts

Promotes Equity

Supports Reading Comprehension

Builds Background Knowledge

All children, regardless of background, receive the same high-quality content and opportunities to learn.

Supports Reading Comprehension

The more children know, the better they can understand complex texts and ideas.  Reading comprehension depends heavily on background knowledge.  Children cannot fully understand what they read if they:

  • Lack vocabulary
  • Lack exposure to topics
  • Lack contextual understanding of the world

Prepares for Higher Learning

Supports Reading Comprehension

A strong foundation in content knowledge prepares children for success in middle school, high school and beyond.

Research Highlights

Knowledge-Rich Curriculum

Students in Core Knowledge schools consistently outperform peers in reading and comprehension.

Academic Achievement

Core Knowledge students show stronger academic growth across all subject areas.

College Readiness

Students develop the critical thinking and knowledge base needed for higher education success.

What This Looks Like in the Classroom

  • Kindergarteners learn about ancient civilizations, exploring stories and artifacts from Egypt, Greece, and Rome.
  • First graders study the human body, learning the names and functions of major organs and systems.
  • Second graders explore world geography, locating continents, oceans, and major landmarks.
  • Third graders read classic literature and discuss themes, characters, and historical context.
  • Students engage in rich discussions, ask questions, and make connections across subjects.

This exposure builds intellectual curiosity and academic confidence.

What STEM Means at A Greater Start Learning Center

STEM - Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics - is not just a buzzword at A Greater Start Learning Center.  It is a deliberate approach to teaching young children how to observe, question, and experiment.  Learning how to think, reason, explore and solve problems.

Our STEM instruction is:

  • Hands-on
  • Inquiry-based
  • Integrated with Core Knowledge content
  • Developmentally appropriate

Children learn by doing, not memorizing.  Early STEM education helps children develop critical thinking, creativity, and persistence - skills that are essential for success in school and in life.

Why Early STEM Is Critical

Develops Problem-Solving Skills

Develops Problem-Solving Skills

STEM teaches children that mistakes are a part of learning, questions are valuable and effort leads to understanding.  STEM skills are essential for success in an increasingly technology-driven world.

Science Exploration

Engineering Challenges

Science Exploration

Children conduct simple experiments, observe natural phenomena, and learn to ask scientific questions.

Children design, build, and test structures and solutions, learning from both successes and failures.

Why Core Knowledge + STEM Together

At A Greater Start Learning Center, LLC, we integrate Core Knowledge and STEM because they complement each other perfectly.  Core Knowledge provides the content and context, while STEM provides the hands-on application and problem-solving and is woven into daily learning - not treated as an add-on.

Core Knowledge provides what children show know.

STEM teaches how children use that knowledge.

For example:  When children learn about plants in their Core Knowledge science unit, they don't just read about plants - they plant seeds, observe growth, measure changes, record data, and discuss what they notice.  This approach makes learning active, meaningful, and memorable.

This combination ensures that children are not only knowledgeable but also capable - ready to think critically, solve problems, and engage deeply with the world around them.
